Tab. II · The season

October, plate X

The last dahlias, heavy-headed after a cold night. Nerines in sugared-almond pink. Hips turning on the dog roses along the canal, and Michaelmas daisies in a cool, late violet. This is what is in the buckets this week.

Before the doors open

We are in at 5:40. The buckets were filled the night before so the stems could drink, and by seven they are full of whatever the growers brought: dahlias still cold from the field, eucalyptus from Cornwall, rosehip branches cut from a hedge on the way. One of us sorts by colour, the other by height. Nothing is flown in.
